What is Mardi Gras?
The Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras is a festival held in Sydney, which is attended by hundreds of thousands of people from all around Australia and abroad. It is the biggest pride event held in the entire Oceanic region! The event has grown from gay rights parades which have been happening in Sydney since 1978. Many marching groups and floats promote LGBTQI rights, issues or themes. More recently, participants now include groups of servicemen and women, police, firefighters and other emergency service workers.
Looking ahead, the future of our rainbow family is growing brighter than ever!
This year, the Mardi Gras parade will be held in the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, March 5th. With over 6500 people marching and 160+ glittering floats, this year’s event will be a do-not-miss spectacular! The theme for this year’s celebrations is UNITED WE SHINE. This theme is representative of the LGBTQI+ communities shining brighter together, and by standing up against hate and inequality together, the message of love and inclusion can and will be heard far and wide.
