It's a question as old as time, and one of the most searched for topics on our blog,Can you have sex with someone on their period?Short answer: yes.
Long answer: yes, but there are some extra practical tips everyone should keep in mind to make it as fun as possible (which is what this blog covers so read on!)
For many people, yes. During your cycle there's increased blood flow in the genital area, which can heighten sensitivity. That meansmore sensation which is great for some, overwhelming for others. Everyone’s body is different, so go with what feels good.
It can. (Good) sex can increase the levels of ‘feel good’ hormones in your body (endorphins, oxytocin, dopamine), which can be an effective method to relieve pain; which can help with cramps.
So an orgasm makes all the muscles in your pelvic floor contract - that's what those pulse-y feelings are- you know what else is in that region? ✨The Uterus ✨. Muscle contractions can help dislodge the uterine lining a bit to keep things moving and help it be over quicker.
Its also worth knowing that the cervix (the opening to the uterus, at the top of the vaginal canal) moves throughout your cycle. During your period it sits lower down in the vagina and gets a bit more firm (compared to when you're ovulating for example when it sits higher up and is softer) This means on your period deeper penetration might feel more uncomfortable than it would at another point in your cycle. But this varies from person to person.
Blood can be a pretty effective lubricant supplement. Period blood specifically at least, since it's kinda a mix of fluids. If you choose to do any kind of penetrative situation, blood (in addition to lube; natural or otherwise) can make things glide a bit more easily. Not a glamorous fact but there it is.
I won’t beat around the bush - some mess is to be expected when having sex or masturbating on your period. But there are things we can do to mitigate that issue.
Absorbent surfaces
Personally I think splash blankets are the perfect tool for this. They’re waterproof so any fluids won’t leak through onto the sheets or surface underneath you. They’re also machine washable and designed to be cleaned easily so you don’t need to worry about staining.
Check out our options here for waterproof blankets
Old towels work in a pinch but they’re not waterproof so depending on flow there's no guarantee of it not soaking through onto the bed.
Keep play external
Try wearing something internally like a tampon, menstrual cup, disc or diaphragm or sponge and focus on clitoral stimulation. Minimal fuss and still a good time to be had. If you’re concerned about potentially getting blood on your hands, consider wearing a rubber glove to make clean up a breeze.
Hop in the shower
This is the perfect opportunity to get jiggy with it in the shower - either by yourself or with a partner. Wash away any evidence as it appears
Incidentally there are a LOT of toys that can be used in the shower for both internal and external stimulation (they should say IPX7 or Waterproof).
These are all waterproof options that are super easy to clean. But remember you can use anything you would use when you’re not on your period; these are just our recs.
Thele wand Dive is the first fully submersible waterproof wand so not only can you use it in the shower but in up to three meters of water and for longer than 30mins. As someone that loves a long bath, this is Very Exciting News.
I’ll die on this hill: everyone with a clitoris should try an air pulse toy. They tend to be gentler, ideal if you’re feeling extra sensitive. My forever fave?Satisfyer Pro 2: waterproof, reliable, iconic.
Want something internal? Save your wrist some trouble with theCaleXOtics Love Bunny Thrusting or Rotating versions for that combo internal and external stimulation
Personally? I don't think so. It’s just blood. Completely natural, completely harmless. But everyone’s comfort level is different, and that’s okay. Do what feels right for you (and your partner, if applicable).
Want to channel your inner vampire? Go for it. Swallowing period blood doesn’t pose any particular health issues. It might taste somewhat metallic but that won’t hurt you.
The risk profile for period sex is the same as other activities where you are sharing body fluids - including oral sex. Body fluids can contain pathogens that cause chlamydia, hepatitis, or HIV.
The best thing to do is get tested, know your status, and communicate with your lovers.
Tragically, yes. It's less likely but it is still distinctly possible. Sperm can live in your body for up to a week, so depending on when you ovulate it can still do its job. So take all necessary precautions as you normally would in that department.
Holding your hand here babe:
If someone is making you feelguilty orgross about pleasure on your period, they don’t deserve access to your body atany time of the month. Not being comfortable with period sex is fine. Shaming someone is not.
A true knight isn’t afraid of a little blood on his sword.
Ok gentlemen; firstly I think we should take the word convince out of our vocabulary in this conversation. If this is something you're interested in exploring with your girlfriend; great and fantastic. The way to approach that is with a healthy honest conversation with your partner. Let them know that this is something you would really like to enjoy together and ask if they would be comfortable trying.
If they're not interested: drop it. It's as simple as that. You are not entitled to sex; even with a long term partner.
If you even think the phrase: "well her mouth still works fine" take a moment to reflect. Then go to the shops and buy her a sweet treat and ask if she needs a heat pack or a back rub.
If you're horny and she's not; explore some self love options and be grateful you don't experience cramps.
Period sex isn’t mandatory, but it is valid, healthy, and for many it's deeply pleasurable. Whether it’s self-love or shared love, your body doesn’t check out for a week every month. Neither should your pleasure.
